This song is actually the first song that I wrote for my new album and before that I had a couple months where I was just distraught because I could not write, and for me, writing is like my therapy. So normally when I’m depressed or sad or just having even just a bad day of any kind, I’ll go home and I’ll write about it and it will make me feel better. But I wasn’t able to write for some reason, even though I was feeling sad and it was just making everything so much worse. Then I went into the session with my best friend, Drew, who I write a lot of my songs with, and then these two Swedish guys, this producer and this guitar player/writer who is just phenomenal, it was my first time meeting them and I immediately told them “I have writer’s block right now and I haven’t been able to write, I have no idea what’s gonna happen, I’ll probably want to go home and cry, so just letting you know.” Then I just started writing. I wrote the first verse first, I just wrote and I just kept writing lines and lines and lines and then we didn’t have a hook idea, I was just like “it’s coming to me, it’s coming to me, oh my God,” it was like coming out of my head. Then I’ve said like I don’t exist and then I looked at Drew and I was like what if this is the hook? What if that’s it and it’s that simple? And he was like “yeah.” Then we just wrote the rest of the song and I went home and I was so happy, I was like it’s all over, my writer’s block is done, I can go back to my life. It was really awesome and it was a great moment. I mark that day as the beginning of the new era, the beginning of everything. AboutAsk us a question about this songAsk a question *How did this song come together? This song was really hard for me to write. I wrote it when I first moved out to LA, and I was feeling kind of confused about life. I didn’t really have a lot of friends here, but I didn’t fit in back home. I was just in a weird in-between place in my life. It was one of the first few songs I wrote that I actually really liked and was getting a good direction. It was really hard. I actually cried a lot in this session because it’s such an emotional song, and I was just not in a great place in my life. The producer is such a nice guy. I work with him all the time now. He was just being so understanding and nice. I came out of it feeling so much better. But it’s such a sad song. It’s almost hard for me to sing and put out in the world to let people know I’m that vulnerable and I can get that there any specific event that caused Olivia to write this song?Stuff builds. I hate to be like, “Life is like a rollercoaster,” but it kind of is. Especially when you do music, or you’re in the public eye, and the highs are really fucking high when you perform in arenas and shit ,and people are screams the lyrics to your song. That’s crazy and so happy. And then you go home, getting hate online and just people being rude and stuff like that. It can get really like hard. You have to be really strong. I’m not that strong yet. I think I’m getting there. It’s obviously getting better, but at first it was just so hard for me to just deal with everything that was happening. There is a point that you’re kind of just pushed over the edge a little have the artists said about the song?It [“Empty”] was extremely emotional and I think a lot of people are going to relate to it. You know, I haven’t released a sad song since “I hate u I love u.” But I think people who liked “I hate u I love u” are going to like this. It doesn’t focus on love, it focuses on personal feelings and struggles. I just think it’s going to be a good one. I also have a music video coming out for it and I’m really excited about that! – Olivia O'Brien in a 2017 interview with Atwood can I listen to this song?Is there a Genius 'Verified' video for this track?Who produced “Empty” by Olivia O'Brien? When did Olivia O'Brien release “Empty”?Who wrote “Empty” by Olivia O'Brien?CreditsRelease DateFebruary 17, 2017Tags [Verse 1] I hate going out, I hate coming home I hate how you're never pickin up your phone, yeah Just pick up your phone, yeah I hate faking like, like we get along I hate how everybody wanna do me wrong, yeah Ain't even like mine songs, yeah [Pre-Chorus] You act like you did it yourself But you're just taking credit for somebody else, yeah You're somebody else, yeah You look like you're nice, but you're not And if anyone likes you, it's just cause you're hot, yeah And you think you're hot, yeah [Chorus] Love ain't a thing in Ain't no love in Love ain't a thing in Ain't no love in But nothin' is real anyway [Verse 2] Say you needed me, but I guess you don't Cause you met somebody better now you're out the door, yeah Now you’re out the door, yeah Think you traded up, but in the end you lost Guess you gained a little fame, but baby what's the cost, yeah Tell me, what's the cost, yeah [Pre-Chorus] You act like you did it yourself But you're just taking credit for somebody else, yeah You're somebody else, yeah You look like you're nice, but you're not And if anyone likes you, it's just cause you're hot, yeah And you think you're hot, yeah [Chorus] Love ain't a thing in Ain't no love in Love ain't a thing in Ain't no love in But nothin' is real anyway [Bridge] Why you over there looking like you lost some Why you over there looking like you want something I know you want something Why you even here if you ain't gon' do some Why you sittin' there showing off your new some You just sit and stare, nothing in your mind runnin' Nothing in your mind runnin', nothing in your mind runnin' [Chorus] Love ain't a thing in LA Ain't no love in LA Love ain't a thing in Ain't no love in oh Ooh, and nothin' is real anyway Lyrics taken from /lyrics/o/olivia_obrien/
